Water Temperature

However, they can still survive under these conditions for extended periods.
At the optimal temperature range of 18 – 24°C, grey mullets exhibit the most active feeding behavior. Their digestive systems function most efficiently, leading to faster growth rates. In the aquaculture facilities that I supply from, we closely monitor water temperature. For instance, during the cooler months, we may use water heaters to maintain the water temperature at the optimal level. Salinity

In freshwater, grey mullets can survive and grow, but their growth rate may be slower compared to when they are in brackish or marine environments. Freshwater lacks some of the essential minerals and nutrients that are abundant in saltier waters. However, some small – scale aquaculture operations in inland areas raise grey mullets in freshwater ponds. These operations usually rely on carefully formulated feeds to supplement the nutrient deficiency.
Brackish water, with a salinity range of 5 – 30 parts per thousand (ppt), is considered an ideal environment for grey mullets. Water Quality
Water quality is of utmost importance for the growth and well – being of grey mullets. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a key parameter. Grey mullets require a minimum DO level of 4 – 5 mg/L. In well – oxygenated water, they can carry out normal physiological functions such as respiration and digestion. Low DO levels can lead to reduced growth, increased susceptibility to diseases, and even suffocation.
In aquaculture, we use aerators to maintain adequate DO levels. These devices can be mechanical, such as paddlewheel aerators, or diffused air systems. Regular water quality monitoring is essential to ensure that the DO levels do not drop below the required threshold.
Another important water quality parameter is pH. Grey mullets prefer a slightly alkaline to neutral pH range, typically between 7.5 and 8.5. As detritivores, grey mullets have a diverse diet. In the wild, they feed on a variety of organic matter, including decomposing plant material, algae, bacteria, and small invertebrates. In aquaculture, we need to ensure a consistent supply of suitable food for the grey mullets.
Commercially available fish feeds are often used to supplement their diet. These feeds are formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of grey mullets. They typically contain a balanced combination of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. However, we also encourage the natural growth of food sources in the ponds.
By maintaining good water quality and providing a suitable substrate, we can promote the growth of algae and other microorganisms. This natural food source not only reduces the cost of feeding but also provides a more balanced diet for the grey mullets, leading to better growth and health.
